COP Lecture 2: Visual Literacy

Visual Communication: Is the process of sending and receiving messages using type and image, based on a level of shared understanding, of signs, symbols, gestures and objects.

The ability to interpret, make and design the form of a image for a purpose.

For example toilet signs can be read through symbols.

These are universal and cultural symbols.

Visual Syntax: a pictorial structure.
Visual Semantics: where the image fits the cultural process.

Semiotics: Study of signs.

Symbols can be logos.

Signs form an identity.

And a signifier forms a brand.

Visual Synecdoche, is when a part is used to represent the whole.

Visual Metonym, a symbolic image is made to make a reference to something with a more literal meaning.

Visual Metaphor is used to transfer one meaning to another. Every object has the chance to mean more, the metaphor must be 'worked.'

Visual language meant a lot to me because it strips design back to the basics, and all forms of design and art strive to choose parts of a composition simplify what is real and enough has to be chosen to make a good piece of art/design work. And if too much is chosen it can be overcomplicated. This can be applied to animation by keeping the narrative/characters/any element simple enough for telling the story, conveying a message but without being over complicated and ending up confusing the audience. It is a skill that takes a lot of practice and one that no animator/designer/filmaker/creative can ever believe they have mastered as when we reflect we always want to add more, or take out, however with each piece of work we can improve this skill.
